COURSE DESCRIPTION

Spread Your Wings provides opportunities for students to participate in a learning experience that combines classroom instruction with business and industry employment experiences while supporting strong partnerships among school, business, and community stakeholders. The goal is to prepare students with a variety of skills for a fast-changing workplace while providing academic planning, career development, financial literacy, and technology. 

This instructional arrangement will include a variety of comprehensive components suited to meet the student’s individual career goals, academic needs, and learning style. 

Students will be taught employability skills, which include job-seeking skills, job interview techniques, communication skills, financial and budget activities, human relations, and portfolio development.

Professional Seminar is relevant, rigorous, supports student attainment of academic standards, and effectively prepares students for college and career success.

COURSE GOALS

  • Present the skills and concepts needed to succeed in the workforce
  • Assess personal strengths, talents, values, and interests to appropriate jobs and careers to maximize career potential
  • Evaluate/research occupational interests
  • Use a variety of research tools (e.g. computer-assisted programs, textbooks, onsite job shadowing, project-based learning, and the Internet)
  • Relate and identify career interests and transferable skills necessary for opportunities in the workforce
  • Develop understanding of business vocabulary/terminology
  • Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills necessary for employment
  • Foster business ethics and attitudes required for success
  • Develop an individual career plan and portfolio
  • Identify and demonstrate employability skills including job search, selection, the
  • interview process, proper attire, and self-presentation
  • Discuss how personal choices, experiences, technology, education/training, and other factors correlate with earning a living
  • Promote a positive work ethic
BY THE END OF THIS COURSE STUDENTS WILL:
  • Identify and apply for employment opportunity
  • Develop a personal resume
  • Develop a professional portfolio
  • Complete job search documents, including job applications
  • Be able to manage and maintain finances and savings
